    Double-Dare Diplomacy

This is a time when we, the U S A, need all the friends we can find. It certainly is not a time when we should make new enemies. If possible, we should be searching for ways to convert old enemies into friends. President Bush seems to disagree with this view. Instead of trying to gain friends he seems to be looking for a fight.

Iran is another of the nations that Mr. Bush loves to hate. There is more support for disliking Iran than there was for hating Iraq prior to the invasion of that nation in 2003. It would not be convenient to accuse Iran of having s supply of W M D’s or that they helped carry out the attack on the Trade Center towers. There isn’t sufficient evidence to justify a Regime Change to remove a tyrant from power in Iran. Finally, the people of the United States are not in a mood to start a war with a nation that has not attacked us. In fact some folks feel that we should ask Iran to help us find a solution to the mess have gotten ourselves into in Iraq.

In the absence of a good reason for a ‘preemptive strike’ against Iran President Bush seems stymied in his search for a reason to attack Iran. Yet, a war with Iran would relieve him of the severe criticism of the Iraq debacle. If only Iran would attack us Mr. Bush would be forced to recognize that a state of war existed. Surely our nation would not object to making a decisive strike against any nation that attacked us.

Into this stinking pot of brew comes the idea that we dare Iran to attack us. There are countless ways of challenging them to respond to raids or kidnapping in a manner that can be interpreted to be an attack. We could put a fleet of ships in the water off their coast and in a sense dare them to sneak up to one of them and attach a bomb to its hull. Or there might be a missile that lands on the deck of a Carrier whose source of origin could only be surmised to be Iran. There surely are many men on staff who are capable of issuing Double-Dare challenges that could not be ignored by Iran.

Surely I jest!! Yes, but my jesting is not in a class with the Intelligence cooking, false evidence and fact manipulation that preceded the invasion of Iraq.

Yet, surely no president of the United States would allow such things to happen! Still, we still remember the lies and deceit that led us into Iraq and realize the character of the president we have. Then we come face to face with the question of what can be done to prevent these things from happening. Some would say “Pray”. Some would say “Impeach”. Others would say “Write your Congressman”.

However serious we consider this to be, it is imperative that we consider some facts that may have great influence on the President’s thinking and actions during the remainder of his term: 1. President Bush realizes that he is destined to be considered a failure as president unless a way is found to avoid failure in Iraq. 2. President Bush has demonstrated that he doesn’t know how to manage a war. 3. President Bush is a novice at managing International relations, feeling that superior force can solve any problem. 4. President Bush enjoys being a “War President”. 5. President Bush is thinking seriously about his Legacy.

These factors make it imperative that every citizen pay close attention to all the news every day and consider the implications associated with each item and express their concerns to their representatives in Washington and to the local news media.
