    Fooling Us Again

    FOOLING US AGAIN

It is not easy to contradict a President. If he says he has authority to do something one is expected to believe he has that authority. When this is repeated several times one comes to raise questions and suspect that he is fooling us. In fact, the opposition party has an obligation to question actions that appear to exceed the authority inherent the office or that appear to be in violation of the law.

During the last three years President has fooled us many times, beginning with his claim that he went to war with Iraq because he relied on faulty Intelligence. While some of the intelligence was faulty, President Bush had other intelligence that was accurate which showed that the war was not justified.

When members of Congress questioned his decision to go to war with Iraq President Bush replied that they had the same intelligence he had and yet voted approval of his war plans. The facts were they did not. They were supplied selected information from the intelligence the president had and were permitted limited time to review other papers and were not allowed to make copies for detailed study.

False information was fed to us in the President’s State of the Union speech, in press reports that “We have found the weapons of mass destruction” and “We do not torture”. These were not slips of the tongue by an honest president wishing to inform the American people. They were lies meant to fool the public about the situation on Iraq.

President Bush launched a secret wire-tapping operation in violation of federal law that requires getting court orders prior to doing such operations. This is made much more serious by the fact of his bypassing a law which was passed with the specific purpose of allowing such searches, but requiring authorities to get the permission of a secret court set up to make this possible. This is part of a scheme to fool us into believing that he has authority he does not have.

We are led to believe that we are striving to insure that the people in Iraq will have equal rights, freedom of the press and free enterprise like we have in the U.S. At the same time he is paying people to write false or misleading articles to be published in Iraq media. He also staged an International news conference in which he used U.S. soldiers who had been coached in what to say to the American public about how the war was progressing.

President Bush contends that “We do not torture.” And has abides by a policy that does not consider sleep deprivation, sexual humiliation, use of dogs to terrorize prisoners, forced nudity, extended exposure to extreme temperatures, waterboarding, mock executions and mock burials as torture. With such a definition one can understand how Mr. Bush can hold to the belief that the nation does not torture. He is trying to fool us into believing false definitions and also that no Americans will be captured in the future.
