Clements History
Judy, Mable Elizabeth Clary spelled her name Mable. All I ever heard about was that Mama had the impression that the father was lazy and would sit around the house rather than doing something to better the family's situation. I don't think I ever heard that Mama disliked them. The little creek that we fished in would flood [rise a few inched as it overflowed to make a swamp] It was at those times that Johnnie would get barefooted and wade in his trips to Mable's. Most of the time the path was dry.
Elva may have had chickens, most farmers do. However, they didn't raise chickens for sale. Their business was dairy milk production.
I went to Montgomery in 1929, then to Atlanta in 1937. My wedding was in 1940, rented a duplex for a year and bought the Clairmont house 12/06/41. I think Johnnie and Aubrey had gone into the Service by that date. The Draft Board [Ralph McGill, Chmn] was reviewing my status. I got word fromn somewhere that they needed IBM machine operators and were giving Commissions to qualified enrollees. When I checked, they had gotten enough and had discontinued the deal. It was about 1942 when they drafted Bill [then Webster] and Mama arranged to come live with us.
I don't remember the exact time, but Ed Bunn was drafted about this time and Marge, Freer, Beth and Andrea come to live with us[I think I had gone into the Army before they came to Clairmont].
Aubrey had transferred to Atlanta and a couple of other places by the date of our wedding. He had given me his car [as Auditor he rode trains and busses], with a deal that when I traded or sold it he would get half of the price, which he did.
I think I have told you everything now. However, if any questions arise, just let me know.
Love, Jerry
