War?
War Bulletin 9-9-2002
Dear Folks,
For some time I have been alarmed about the possibility of our going to war with Iraq, but was not sure how to express my concern and also thinking that public opinion [including world opinion] would convince President Bush that it would be unwise to invade Iraq.
At this time world opinion seems to have expressed itself against the idea as leaders of England, France and Canada have spoken in opposition. National opinion seems to be stalled as we struggle between being viewed as cowards or as unpatriotic and have remained silent to a large extent. Still several publications have expressed disapproval, with some telling of growing unfavorable attitudes about our character and leadership.
It appears to me that our president feels that Saddam Hussein must be overthrown and that we are the folks to do the job. I have read of concern that getting rid of him would bring a very long period of turmoil in Iraq and we would have a long and very expensive job of getting a satisfactory government set up there, with little assurance that it would survive our departure.
At this time I am frightened of the possibility of an event of some sort that would cause a war to break out, with that event having been instigated by us (secretly or openly).
In additional to the direct cost, in lives, resources and money, of invading and subduing Iraq, including the nation-building that must follow, I am concerned about the resulting influence such a war would have on our attitudes about unprovoked attacks on other nations. Also, I guess that large number of young people would take drastic steps to avoid the trip to Baghdad and this would cause a great deal of unrest, confusion and anger among the general population.
I wanted to get this word to you even though it is not presented as a full expression of my feeling on this matter. Your comments are invited. I love you all.
